Number Sense Food Grades 4–6

Drill Bit Fractions

In this updated activity, students explore how drill bits are measured using fractions of an inch. They will use equivalent fractions to compare drill bit sizes, fill in missing numerators, and think about why fractions are used instead of decimals by converting fractions to decimals. Students will also consider why standard drill bit sizes exist.

For younger grades, it's very important to kick off with the starter slides to guide them before the main activity. Don't forget the teaching notes & prompts in the speaker's notes.

Extension: Students who need a greater challenge can be given the extension task right away instead of completing the main activity. See solutions & supporting materials.
